I am not a coffee drinker, but I’m fascinated by coffee and coffeehouses. I hang out at a coffee house but drink decaf/herbal teas to keep my blood pressure down. There’s something about the smell of coffee beans that stimulates my creative juices. Here are some poems and stories that have been written inside the hallowed halls of a coffee shop.

The Volunteer, by Mark Tulin
“Do you have anything planned for today?” the barista asked the customer, waiting for a latte.
The lady said she was headed for her volunteer job at a homeless walk-in shelter.
“What do you do there?”
“Serve meals, play cards, and whatever's needed.”
“Must be nice to do something good?”
A homeless man interrupts the women. "Excuse me, ma'am, can you spare a cup of coffee?"
The barista told the man she couldn't give out free drinks; it was against company policy.
The volunteer smiled. "It's your lucky day, sir. I know where you can get coffee and a donut."

Thank you, Nombuso Makhubu, a fellow author at Medium.com, for your comment about my short story A Pleasant Distraction. “I always look out for your work as it is truly brilliant, funny, realistic, and just takes one away from the here & now. Thank you for doing this for us.”
