Flash fiction is a great literary form, especially nowadays when everything is so fast-paced, and people want a quick read that’s fulfilling and memorable. Here are a few of my flash stories.

For those who like a clean house:
The Perfect Housekeeper by Mark Tulin
She came to my apartment every Tuesday morning. While I was at work, she mopped the floors and scrubbed the tub. I didn’t have to tell her what needed to be cleaned; she knew instinctively that there was dust on the blinds and under the bed. She even found the grime at the base of my electric toothbrush. There’s nothing that she didn’t clean, and she never missed anything. She’s an omnipresent goddess, knowing all my dirty habits, what messes I made, and where. She was so good it was scary. So, I fired her and hired someone who wasn’t perfect.

Alexa in the Morning, by Mark Tulin
12/8/2020
Alexa, the black cylinder with the blue flashing light: Good morning, Jack. It is 630 a.m. Time to wake up.
Jack: Alexa, It’s too early.
Alexa: Jack, you programed me last night. I am doing my job.
Jack puts a pillow over his head.
Alexa: Remember that morning is God’s way of saying that you have another chance to make a difference.
Jack: Alexa, what kind of difference?
Alexa: To touch someone’s heart, encourage a mind, or inspire a soul.
Jack: Alexa, that seems like too much work.
Alexa: In that case, Jack. Just try not to offend anyone.
When it comes out of nowhere:
When you’re not too important to be controlled:
The Alpha Female, by Mark Tulin
24/4/2020
No question Vanessa was brilliant. She went to the best university and was a true alpha female who everyone respected and admired.
Only a few years after graduation, Vanessa became the CEO of a major corporation of over twenty thousand employees. She controlled every aspect of the company. She bought a large house in an upscale community with fifty acres of land and put up a massive fence to assure her safety.
She controlled every aspect of her life, except for one thing—her cat. Her cat was an alpha feline who had a much stronger need to control than Vanessa.
